BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS SUBMISSION POLICY

Due to an increasing number of research pathology submissions (especially for CBC and serum chemistry analysis) and limited staffing in our laboratory, the following policies for research project-related blood and body fluid submissions to UAC Pathology Services are effective immediately:

  1. Investigators planning to submit samples for analysis must schedule the submission with the laboratory (626-7661) at least 2 days in advance for hematology submissions, at least 1 week in advance for serum chemistry submissions (due to the need to order reagents), and preferably as soon as the submission date for the samples is known.

  2. Scheduled sample submissions:

a.  submitted at the UAC receptionist areas at the AHSC Animal Facility before noon, and at the Central Animal Facility before 2 PM, will be processed on automated equipment within 24 hours

b.  submitted after these times on Monday through Thursday will be processed on automated equipment within 48 hours

c.   will not be scheduled for Fridays after the times indicated above

  1. Unscheduled samples

a.  are strongly discouraged as they are extremely disruptive to our ability to coordinate and perform other tasks for which the laboratory is responsible (e.g. quality assurance procedures for the campus animal facilities)

b.  will be processed only after scheduled submissions have been processed

c.  must be accompanied by a phone call from the investigator to the laboratory (626-7661) prior to submission

d.  might not be processed on automated equipment within 48 hours of submission

e.  submitted on Friday will likely not be processed until the following Monday

f.   processed after 48 hours may generate data that is compromised due to the delay in processing (especially CBC submissions); the investigator accepts full responsibility for these potentially compromised data

g.  submitted on a repeated basis by the same investigator will incur a charge for technician time in addition to the usual test fees (technician hourly rate spent on processing samples), and may ultimately be denied if an investigator consistently fails to make an effort to schedule samples

Please work with us so that our relatively small laboratory can serve ALL investigators on campus and provide the highest quality of data possible.  Thanks!
